The top ten institutions for physical sciences for 2023 are listed below, which published more than 1,000 articles. This list is based on information gathered from the editors of journals that publish these topics. It contains no weighting, and a growing number of authors are not included because their publications have not yet been indexed by JCI. The index is maintained by Elsevier Science since 1998 and the journals that it tracks were selected with guidance from several major editorial boards, including Nature, New England Journal of Medicine, European Scientific Reviews, International Mathematical Society, etc.

More than 1,000 articles in 62 journals received the distinction of being selected as NBER Academic Journals, while many journals in the Nature Index (2021) and JCI (2017) lists have published 1,000+ articles, which is close to the maximum. Northwestern publishes more than half of all articles to be published in the journals. Over 70% of graduate students have completed study at Northwestern University, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, and as of 2019, the university is considered a magnet for professors, researchers and graduate students seeking postdoctoral positions.
